Mathematicians from France and Canada to Meet to Discuss Ways to Combat Threats to Internet Security, Computer Networks | December 7, 2007
Vancouver, B.C. – December 5, 2007 – French and Canadian mathematicians are meeting in Vancouver this week to discuss how to strengthen the security of information and computer networks around the globe.
The two-day meeting – which takes place December 6 – 8 at SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver – is being hosted jointly by Burnaby, B.C.-based math research network MITACS - the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems- and the Consulate General of France in Canada.
"It is with great satisfaction that the Consulate General of France supported this initiative," said Consul General Luc Sérot-Alméras. "This cooperation between French and Canadian mathematicians will undertake many major developments in the years to come."
The delegation from French universities and l'Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) – will meet with researchers from MITACS, a federally-funded Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) in the mathematical sciences that brings together researchers and companies in a collaborative effort to solve problems of key importance to society and industry.
According to Scientific Attaché Danielle Ziebelin, “In the field of information and communication, security and cryptography are areas of strategic importance and as such, are a top priority for the Science Department of the French Embassy. Canadian and French expertise are indisputable, and sharing the knowledge can only benefit both parties. We expect a lot from this cooperation.”
Attendees will discuss collaborating around key topics in security and cryptography and organizing student exchanges between the two countries.
“Protecting our increasingly connected world has become critical to the normal functioning of all aspects of our society,” said Dr. Evangelos Kranakis, Professor of Computer Science at Carleton University and leader of MITACS Communication, Networks and Security research theme. “By discussing the emerging aspects of mathematical security from encryption, coding, networking and software verification to applications in wireless devices, this workshop will explore links and potential research collaborations between Canada and France.”
“MITACS is gratified to have the opportunity to work closely with leading French mathematicians on these critical security issues,” said Dr. Arvind Gupta, Scientific Director of MITACS. “By combining the expertise of both countries, we will have the opportunity to make great strides in protecting information and computer networks.”
