Canadian Standards Association interactive learning tool wins first place at International Games Competition   |  December 11, 2007

TORONTO, Dec. 11 /CNW/ - Canadian Standards Association (CSA), a leading developer of standards and codes, today announced its Response Ready interactive learning tool was recently awarded a first place in the category of Future Serious Games at the Future Play 2007 International Games Competition. The award recognizes new and emerging talent in game design for games that are not necessarily built for pure entertainment, but for other purposes such as learning.

"As a leading solutions provider, CSA is committed to facilitating and enhancing learning through fun, interactive computer based technologies and we are very excited to receive this award in recognition of our achievement in this category," said Suzanne Kiraly, President, Standards, Canadian Standards Association. "New interactive learning tools such as Response Ready offer easy to use, cost-effective training options for business and industry and we look forward to introducing more eLearning products of this calibre in the coming year."

Response Ready, which was introduced in September 2007 as one of CSA's newest eLearning product lines, is designed to help site managers, environmental managers and safety professionals refine their methods for developing emergency response plans through emergency simulation computer games. The game uses a trial and error methodology to highlight what responses may or may not work in real-life situations. This allows users to test planning skills in a forgiving virtual environment rather than waiting for a real disaster to take place.

In the game, emergency planners and responders practice sections of the CAN/CSA Z731 Emergency Preparedness and Response standard. They identify hazards, balance effort against severity and probability, generate procedures and run through a simulated emergency to test the effectiveness of their plans. The innovative training method makes use of Digital Games Based Learning (DGBL) methodology, commonly referred to as Serious Games. Response Ready was made possible by DISTIL Interactive, of Ottawa, Ontario, a provider of interactive an intuitive automated e-learning platforms that enhance personnel skills training and assessment.

Response Ready was also one of eight finalists at the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). The Showcase & Challenge identifies innovative game-based technologies and solutions that improve training across all segments for individuals, groups and systems.
